Tour 2:  The Geoscience Australia Satellite Data Acquisition Facility

Duration: 3 hour Tour

Depart: Monday, 13th September & Friday, 17th September 2010 – 9.00am to 12.00pm

Venue: DAF – Data Acquisition Facility of Geoscience Australia

Coordinator: Craig Smith

Cost:  $100.00

This tour is based on a visit to the Data Acquisition Facility (DAF) of Geoscience Australia.  The facility was established in 1979 to receive images acquired by the Landsat satellite.

The DAF has been the key facility in the development of a significant archive of earth observation data of Australia and its surrounding waters from a range of earth observation satellite sensors including ESA ERS, AQUA and TERRA MODIS, RADARSAT, SPOT Panchromatic and Multispectral, and IRS-P6 LISS-III and AWiFS.

Participants will be able to inspect the reception Antennae located at DAF and will be provided with an explanation of activities at the DAF.  It is anticipated that the timing of the Tour will coincide with a live reception from an earth observation satellite.

A bus will take participants to the DAF which is located between Alice Springs and the Airport, the tour includes morning tea at the facility.
